The World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi) provides a benchmarking system for countries to assess the status of implementation the WHO’s Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding in a standard way. The WBTi uses 15 indicators to track and compare progress:
- Early Initiation of Breastfeeding
- Exclusive Breastfeeding for the first 6 months
- Median Duration of Breastfeeding
- Bottle-feeding Rates
- Complementary Feeding
In the United States, Healthy Children Project spearheads collection of the data on each of these indicators on a state-by-state basis and compiles the national data, with the goal of providing state, local, and national governments, hospitals and organizations in the healthcare field with a reference to help determine what is going well and where more investment is needed.
The 2023 WBTi Draft Assessment Report is available and ready for review.
